How Barack Obama Won—by one of the most lauded political journalists of our time, and one of the most respected pollsters in the business—gives us not only the inside state-by-state guide to how Obama achieved his victory, but also the essential toolbox for understanding the political implications of the 2008 presidential election—where the country stands vis-à-vis Red and Blue states, where it currently is and is headed politically, and whether a political realignment has taken place.

The book features an introduction by Chuck Todd, putting the 2008 presidential election in political and demographic perspective, even as it reveals national trends. The final electoral map will appear in the front matter, as will unexpected “fun facts.” The book is divided into four parts, each of which proceeds alphabetically state by state: Battleground States (e.g., Colorado, Florida, Idaho); Emerging Battleground States (e.g., Arizona, Georgia, Montana); Receding Battleground States (e.g., Michigan, Pennsylvania); Red and Blue States (e.g., Idaho and Mississippi, California and New York).

The votes in each state for Obama and McCain are broken down by percentage according to gender, age, race, party, religious affiliation, education, household income, size of city, and according to views about the most important issue (the economy, terrorism, Iraq, energy, healthcare), the future of the economy (worried, not worried) and the war in Iraq (approve, disapprove). Comparative figures for the 2004 Bush–Kerry election are provided. Each state profile is comprised of a table of numbers—with crucial lines highlighted—and analysis. From the book’s treasury of facts you will learn about:

First Time Voters: The ratio of first-time to previous voters was identical to the 2004 split. Eleven percent (11%) of the electorate voted for the first time in 2004 and 2008. In 2008 70% voted for Obama whereas in 2004 only 53% voted for Kerry.

White Voters: Obama won the white vote in 18 states and the District of Columbia: CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IL, IA, ME, MA, MI, MN, NH, NY, OR, RI, WA, WI and VT. Obama received less than 35% of the white vote in 13 states, with Louisiana (14%), Mississippi (11%) and Alabama (10%) picking up the rear.

The Bush Factor: With the exception of Missouri (which barely went to McCain), Obama won every state where Bush’s approval rating was below 35% in the exit polls; he lost every state where Bush’s approval rating was above 35%. Bush’s approval rating was highest in Utah (47%), which supported McCain by a 29 point margin, and lowest in Washington,D.C. (8%), where McCain received only 7% of the vote.

Florida: Votes for McCain were 25,000 fewer than for Bush in 2004; Obama’s exceeded Kerry’s by 540,000.

Ohio: Votes for Obama were 34,000 fewer than for Kerry in 2004; McCain’s, however, were 350,000 short of Bush’s.

By the way, since 1928 there has not been a winning Republican presidential/vice-presidential ticket without a Bush or Nixon.

When Television Became A Political Slugfest

When Television Became A Political Slugfest

If you’ve ever tuned in to a Sunday morning talk show like “Meet the Press” on NBC or “This Week” on ABC, you know that your television screen has become a political battleground. Weeknights are the same as Fox Cable News Network competes with MSNBC and CNN to cover the “hot political news” of the day with guests representing every side of the political spectrum – from left to far left to center to right to far right.

Talk shows such as those I’ve just mentioned were not always so readily available. That’s because for most of television’s sixty year or more history viewers enjoyed much more limited access to programming than what is available today.

The main over-the-air networks have always devoted a few hours on Sunday mornings to talk about what is taking place in the nation’s capital, but, until the last fifteen years or so, there were no other choices. As a result, people who cared about political news would be forced to tune in to the three major networks, if possible … or get their information second-hand from someone who had tuned in.

The truth is that before the explosion of programming took place that now gives subscribers to the services of programming providers access to 150 channels, 200 channels, even 250 channels or more there was a viewing choice that was limited to three national networks, a public television station and perhaps two or three local or regional networks. That was it … there was nothing else.

Moreover, the political discourse that took place on Sunday mornings was generally polite and respectful, even when there were extreme differences of opinion. That is no longer the case.

Times have changed, the American culture has changed … the way that politics is conducted has changed most of all. Today, each party sends out “talking heads” to make its case to the public. And because some networks may have a political bias, the news and information may sound entirely different on one station (or network) than it does on another.

It’s a rough game and it always has been. But it’s fair to say it has never been this rough and television in the 21st century has drawn up battle lines … networks have chosen sides … and the “slugging” has become more ferocious and partisan than at any time in recent or even distant history. There is no telling where this new reality will lead.

However, there can be no denying that, today and probably for years and years to come television has become the battleground for the continuing slugfest that is American politics.

Running on Race: Racial Politics in Presidential Campaigns 1960-2000

Running on Race: Racial Politics in Presidential Campaigns 1960-2000

6d46223dcdd9088784c154638adb2e19 Running on Race: Racial Politics in Presidential Campaigns 1960 2000

Racial politics has permeated American presidential campaigns for more than half a century. From John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush, presidents-to-be and their adversaries have dealt with the problems and the opportunities presented by America’s bitter racial divide. Some chose to embrace racial progress, others to play to the white backlash, and still others attempted to do both, often with surprising success.

Jeremy D. Mayer has studied every presidential race from JFK’s campaign in 1960 to George W. Bush’s in 2000 and the crucial difference the black vote has made in each election.

Mayer discusses in detail:
• The 1960 election, where John F. Kennedy brilliantly straddled the civil rights issue. In an effort to satisfy white southerners, he spoke appeasing words to segregated white audiences, and to attract black voters, he called Coretta Scott King while her husband was imprisoned.
• The 1976 primary race between Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford–the last time the black vote mattered for Republicans. Since then, the Republican path to the presidency has been almost entirely white, allowing Republicans to continue rightward on race without costs. Every Republican victory in the modern era has been a product of the incorrigibly white Republican coalition, a coalition nurtured even today by Bush’s ambivalence toward the Confederate flag in 2000.
• “The odd silence of Ronald Reagan,’ who was known as a leading opponent of almost every civil rights bill and yet in his 1980 and 1984 campaigns largely avoided the topic. Mayer explains why Reagan’s strategy was so successful.
• the cynical exploitation of the fear of racial violence as a means to keep black voters loyal to the Democratic Party in the presidential elections of 1980, 1996, and 2000. Mayer shows how both parties have learned to play the race card with vicious effectiveness.

By looking at this all-important aspect of our political life and coming up with new information, Mayer offers fresh insights into one of the most significant factors in our process of determining who governs us.

What Not to Say or Do to a Russian Woman Online

What Not to Say or Do to a Russian Woman Online

Rules of etiquette apply to the online dating arena just as they apply to traditional dating. If you say or do the wrong thing, you can end a potential relationship before it has a chance to blossom. Here are a few tips on things you should avoid saying or doing when first getting to know a Russian lady.

Don’t Talk about Russian Politics

Discussing the details of Russian politics too early in the relationship might make you look like a showoff. Besides, you don’t want to risk offending her if she has strong opinions about a certain subject. Only if she brings up these topics is it OK to talk about them. Otherwise, stick to trying to get to know who she is as a person rather than trying to impress her with how much you already know about her country.

Don’t Discuss Marriage Right Away

Occasionally, men will complain that a certain Russian lady refused their proposal for marriage. What these members fail to understand is that the online dating process is one that takes time – the same way that a traditional relationship takes time. While matchmaking for the purpose of marriage is one of the goals of our service, marriage is still something that happens after a long courtship process. Expecting a Russian woman to marry after you have only known her for a short period of time is unrealistic.

Don’t Ask About Her Previous Relationships

Do you really want to know the details of her previous relationships anyway? As much as you might be curious, prying too much into this area of her life will not only expose you to bad thoughts and feelings, it also suggests to her that you are insecure. So don’t dwell on it.

Don’t Hound her if She Doesn’t Come Online

If a Russian lady tells you that she will be available to chat at a certain time and you don’t hear from her, don’t fret. Sending endless e-mails or subjecting her to an interrogation the next time she comes online shows that you care that she stood you up and screams to her that you are insecure. Accept the fact that she probably leads a busy life and got caught up doing something else. Don’t take it personally. Ignore it. Forget it. And keep talking to her like it never even happened.

These are just a few of the things you want to avoid talking about in the beginning stage of a relationship. While this might seem limiting, there is a wide-range of things you can discuss when first getting to know a Russian lady online. Just remember to keep it simple and take it slow.

Nascar Tickets – Nascar And Politics Wed At Texas Motor Speedway

Nascar Tickets – Nascar And Politics Wed At Texas Motor Speedway

Texas governor Rick Perry has kept no secrets about playing favorites when it comes to NASCAR, and he’ll be cheering along Bobby Labonte’s No. 71 stock car from the Texas Motor Speedway at the April 18 Samsung Mobile 500. Perry has officially merged politics with NASCAR, as his re-election campaign is sponsoring Labonte’s car at the upcoming Texas race.

For racing fans with <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.stubhub.com/nascar-tickets/”>NASCAR tickets</a> to this month’s Texas Sprint Cup race, a first glance at history in the making will be seen zooming around the racetrack. Labonte’s No. 71 Chevy will feature red and blue lettering with the words “Governor Perry” adorning the front and “Perry Governor 2010″ penned on the car’s backside. Perry coughed up 5,000 for the one-race sponsorship, and the Republican will be rooting for the underdog (Labonte is currently 31st in point standings) to take the Samsung Mobile 500 Sprint Cup Series race in mid-April.

Speaking to Dallas Morning News about the unlikely sponsorship, Governor Perry likened Bobby Labonte’s driving to Texas’ “strong economy,” stating, “You build it right and you know what it’s capable of.” Perry continued, “I know that he’s going to take the checkered flag at the speedway and we’re going to take the green flag for the economy.”

Despite the overflowing racing quips to compare politics and racecar driving, a burn was delivered from his rival – Democrat Bill White – earlier this week in the form of White’s spokeswoman Katy Bacon. Responding to Perry’s speech, Bacon said, “Given Perry’s record on education, we’re assuming this car is going to go mostly in reverse or drop out of the race.”

No matter how politics plays out, Bobby Labonte will get to drive in one more race this season, this time under the sponsorship of Rick Perry. He still has a ways to go, however, if he wants to take that checkered flag by storm in the April 18 race at Texas. Labonte’s 2010 NASCAR season has gotten off to a slow start this year, with his best finishes at Daytona and Bristol, where he placed 21st at both.

The TRG Motorsports extraordinaire has been on the Sprint Cup circuit since 1991, and Labonte’s longstanding clout with NASCAR is perhaps what has led a Texas governor to make history in becoming the first politician to ever sponsor a stock car. Labonte spent most of his peak career years with Joe Gibbs Racing in the late ’90s and early ’00s, and No. 71 has notched some very impressive numbers on the Cup Series circuit, winning the Cup championship in 2000 and coming in second overall in 1999.

Though last year was only mildly successful for Labonte, who finished 30th overall after the 2009 season, perhaps Governor Perry’s backing will help ignite a fire under the 45-year-old driver. The Labonte name has deep NASCAR roots, with Bobby’s brother Terry Labonte also having been a NASCAR legend of old, and the Corpus Christi, Texas native will have more than a little support from his home state of Texas as he makes his way to the Texas Motor Speedway later this month for the Samsung Mobile 500. As for Rick Perry’s re-election campaign, that’s a story for another day.

With a focus on competition for resources, this balanced, but provocative text uses Harold Laswell’s classic definition of politics–“Who gets what, when, and how”–as a framework for presenting a clear, cohesive and stimulating introduction to the American political system.

Thomas Dye, along with new co-author Bartholomew Sparrow, has written a lively and absorbing narrative examining the struggle for power that is American politics: the participants, the stakes, the processes, and the institutions.  Numerous feature boxes explore timely issues, draw cross-cultural comparisons, promote critical thinking, and provoke thoughtful opinions.  The alternate edition of this classic text includes the exact same coverage as the comprehensive version but without the policy chapters.

With the intense political conflict of the most expensive presidential campaign in American history and the hotly-contested primary campaigns that led to the national conventions in 2008, Politics in America’s theme of the constant competition for power and resources–“who gets what”–has never been more relevant.

The truth on US government grant programs

The truth on US government grant programs

Believe it or not, US government grants are not given away for free.

Contrary to popular belief, the government of the United States is not giving away money in the form of a grant.

What is a US government grant?

Hector Milla Editor of the “Free Scholarships And Grants” website — http://www.FreeScholarshipsAndGrants.org/free-government-grants-money — pointed out;

“…First things first, a government grant is not something that could be found under the tree come Christmas eve.  It is not a present.  The American Government and Politics define a grant as a kind of a gift that requires particular obligations in the grantee’s part at the same time some kind of expectations in the grantor’s part…”

The best things in life are – really – not free
Take note that a US government grant require some obligations.  Though government grants, once received, will seem to pour in, not being able to fulfill these grants will eventually lead to a lot of legal problems.

Grants serve what purpose?

As much as it is possible, a majority of US government grant programs are actually awarded to those organizations that are planning some projects that will definitely benefit a particular community.

Some government grants for instance award a project focused on paving a neighborhood street.  Others meanwhile focus on the re-training of workers that are displaced.  There are also government grants that attract businesses in a downtown area that is depressed.  A US government grant program has also helped made possible a conserve water program as well as a project for flood-control in the whole country.

These projects are then required by the government to be able to meet strict standards of performance and so should be followed throughout the project’s duration.

Expenses in government grants

Any expenditures brought about by the project and its completion are to be accounted for through audits that are detailed.  This audit is generally conducted by the government in an annual fashion.  This deed makes sure that all the funds granted are spent, and as much as possible, spent appropriately.

Be aware that any money that was not spent has to go directly back to the US Treasury.  Goals for the program need to be developed in detail, approved by the necessary persons, and such goals are to be carried out as exactly specified during the application of the grant.

“…Any changes must first be duly approved by the US government.  The phases the project will undergo are required to be completed as scheduled  and as successfully as possible…” added H. Milla.

All in all, any projects funded by US government grants must be successfully completed, as it benefits society mostly, at the government’s expense.

ca2d444d0b9ff7d4d55edbe18c365618 The Young Karl Marx: German Philosophy, Modern Politics, and Human Flourishing (Ideas in Context)

The Young Karl Marx is an innovative and important study of Marx’s early writings. These writings provide the fascinating spectacle of a powerful and imaginative intellect wrestling with complex and significant issues, but they also present formidable interpretative obstacles to modern readers. David Leopold shows how an understanding of their intellectual and cultural context can illuminate the political dimension of these works. An erudite yet accessible discussion of Marx’s influences and targets frames the author’s critical engagement with Marx’s account of the emergence, character, and (future) replacement of the modern state. This combination of historical and analytical approaches results in a sympathetic, but not uncritical, exploration of such fundamental themes as alienation, citizenship, community, anti-semitism, and utopianism. The Young Karl Marx is a scholarly and original work which provides a radical and persuasive reinterpretation of Marx’s complex and often misunderstood views of German philosophy, modern politics, and human flourishing.

Researcher Finds Plan for Middle East Peace in Modern Physics

Researcher Finds Plan for Middle East Peace in Modern Physics

There is a new paradigm in physics that can be applied to achieving peace in the Middle East, according to Stan Tenen, research director of the Meru Foundation, a non-profit research institute in Sharon, MA. This paradigm is called “superposition” and according to a plan formulated by Tenen, it is applicable to solving a primary obstacle between Israel and the Palestinians.

In physics, mathematics, and engineering, the superposition principle describes the overlapping of waves, and more generally provides a technique to solve linear systems. Tenen says, “In the 19th century world view, there was only room for a single winner. When one party got what they wanted, the other could not. By applying a new scientific paradigm there is enough room in reality for everyone to ‘win’ without the need for others to lose.”

He states that all of organic life contains an intrinsic need of connectivity although they may serve separate functions. “Our liver and pancreas are next to each other, but they have different functions and needs. Each has its own boundary, and there is a region of connective tissue and nutrients flowing between them. In physics and in organic life, we find a double border when two different regions or two different organs with different needs are adjacent.”

Tenen’s observations are based on a thirty-five year research study of geometric patterns rediscovered in the Hebrew text of Genesis. Using principles of physics and topology, he has developed what he calls a “geometric metaphor” that presents a mathematical view of the stories and parables in the bible. In fact, his Middle East plan emanates from a passage in Genesis.

“We find an application of the superposition theory in the politics in Genesis, where Jacob and Laban produce a double boundary to end their dispute. From Gen. 31:51-52 (Kaplan translation) Laban then said, ‘Here is the mound, and here is the pillar, that I have set up between us. The mound shall be a witness, and the pillar shall be a witness. I am not to go beyond the mound with bad intentions, and you are not to go beyond the mound and pillar.’ ”

Tenen believes the idea of a double boundary is the key for peace. “In the mideast, a double boundary can provide a double measure of security. At the same time the area between these boundaries can provide a peaceful corridor for travel and commerce, connecting separated Israeli settlements and Palestinian cities so they can interact freely with each other and with their own.”

Tenen claims that the principle of a double boundary can go beyond the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, he states, “This idea has a unique potential benefit in this region. Muslims are required to make the Hajj journey to Mecca at least once in their lives. Often, this entails travel over long distances at great expense. If the land between the U.N. Green Line and the new Israeli defensive fences were to become a zone of peace, it could also serve as a Hajj Road, to enable Muslims to more easily travel to Mecca and Medina. A double border could go a long way towards giving everyone what they want in the Middle East. But the principle is more general. The double border “Hajj Road” principle of international cooperation and inexpensive and easy travel would spur a social and economic boon in all adjacent nations who adopted it.”

Tenen is undoubtedly the leading authority on geometric metaphor in ancient texts and traditions and is currently presenting his findings through various media outlets. His upcoming book, The Alphabet that Changed the World, How Genesis Preserves A Science of Consciousness in Geometry and Gesture, is due for release in 2008.
